Upgrading OS questions

I'm going upgrade my Windows 2000 to XP and have the following questions:

1. How do I export and re-inport my internet favourites?

2. I have an XP CD with no service packs, will be possible to only install SP1 after checking for updates? (some of my software doesn't work well with SP2).

3. Should I re-format my HD before installing XP? I assuming that XP will wipe everything upon installation.

Thanks

You can use the Ixport/Export feature in Internet Explorer via File>Import/Export
or search the harddrive for the file named "bookmarks.html" (without the quotes and copy it to a floppy or another partition on the harddrive if you have multiple partitions.

You can install the "bare" XP, then when complete install the Service Pack.

Download the Service Pack, if you don't have it.
Service Pack 1a
Look up Slipstreaming XP on Google so you can make a XP CD with the Service Pack intergrated into 1 cd.

It is best to format and do a clean install of any OS so there won't be any potential conflicts later. But this is NOT required.
If you decide to format, make sure you have all of your hardware drivers and software available on CD in case you need it.
Yes, a Format wipes the entire drive out. So, make sure you have your app's and personal files backed up first.

The only way that I know of is to right click in your Favorites and there will be a "Sort by Name" option near the bottom of the context menu

There is a registry hack, but I can't recall the keys offhand. A program like Q-Sort will do it automatically but now it is shareware.....

also I've accumulated a lot of smiles on my msn messenger from other people. Is there a way to back those up as well?

Well ... here's a crude way of doing it. Go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\0000000000\CustomEmoticons

* Replace YourUsername with your username.
* The 0000000000 is your folder. Just try all the folders and find one that's you.

The DAT files you see are the GIF pictures with false extensions. Just rename them to GIF extension and take them to the new computer. You can then create new emoticons with these GIF pics.
