Help with dvd player & decoder....

I hardly ever use my computer for dvd playing. It used to work now when I put in a disc my interactual player gives me the following warning:

Error PL4007: InterActual Player is unable to initialize your DVD decoder for playback. Click “Help Online” (bottom button on the left) for information that will help you properly configure your system for DVD playback.
When I try using windvd. I get the following error:

Create overlay failed. Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again.
I have lowered the resolution to no avail.

These programs both came on my computer. An hp pavillion. I did upgrade the graphics card a few months back to a geforce fx 5700le

Do I need a new dvd program or decoder? I can get the intervideo DVDXpack for $15. Is this what I need? Or should I get something else? I don't want anything fancy. Just play the dvd's and occasionally do a screen grab.

Thanks!!

Do you have multiple monitors hooked up (extended desktop)? If so, that could be the problem.

Or it could be a macrovision issue, perhaps.

My understanding is that certain PC drives don't allow DVDs to be played at greater than 480p. My Dell MCE HTPC came that way. With both PureVideo and PowerDVD. I'd assume the drive's BIOS could be flashed to "correct" that, but I have yet to do so. And in my case, with legit DVDs and player, it is definately a macrovision error (the error very clearly stated so).

I googled your error and there seem to be many things that could cause it. Software incompatibilities with older WinDVD versions seems to be a particular problem (I don't know the current version number, but WinDVD4 seems to be incompatible with a lot of other software).

If you need something short term, nVidia has a 30-day free trial for PureVideo. It also, IMO, happens to have the best DVD codec/deinterlacer/scaler hands down.
