trouble with dvd-r drive-

I received some 16x dvd-r disks for xmas.

problem is-

my dvd-r drive wont recognize them.(keeps telling me to put in dvd-r disks)

my specs are as follows.

CD / DVD type DVD±RW (+R double layer)
CD / DVD read speed 40x (CD) / 8x (DVD)
CD / DVD rewrite speed 24x (CD) / 4x (DVD±RW)
CD / DVD write speed 32x (CD) / 8x (DVD-R) / 16x (DVD+R) / 2.4x (DVD+R DL
(( (DVD-R)))

will 16x work in my drive?

thanks-

Are they Memorex discs? Memorex makes decent cds, but make terrible dvds!
Try a different brand of blanks. Whatever brand they gave you, it sounds like your burner don't like them. Some burners are very finicky about the blanks you use.
Whatever blanks you get, make sure they are a name brand, that's made in Japan, not Taiwan. It will say on the package where they're made. Only exception to this is Verbatim discs.
Good luck!

What is the brand and model of your DVD burner. I have the notorious Philips DVD8631 (OEM on many Dell PCs, but I got mine cheap at Geeks) and I had to backrev and crossflash the firmware to get it working reliably.

Your DVD burner specs limits you to using 8x DVD-R blank media.

At least DVD burner drives are relatively inexpensive to replace.

I'd give it just one more try with this one:

http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/d...d-cf-mcled.rar

Then if it is still nogo, just break down and buy a new one. Good Luck!

Last ditch efforts:

Is your motherboard BIOS up to date?

How is your new burner attached? (Master on IDE1, jumper settings, etc)

Are you using the Sony Click to DVD software to try to burn?

I found a whole page of updates for your drivers, BIOS, etc:

http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-li...teType=Updates

And it looks like there are at least a couple of updates to the Click to DVD software addressing various burning DVD issues. And the latest BIOS there looks to be from 11/26/2004, so you might try it.

Sorry I couldn't get it going for you. The NEC you ordered should work fine though, it's a popular and fairly well received model. If you want your mind blown by thread after thread about the highly technical aspects of burning optical media, check out the forum at http://club.cdfreaks.com/
