direct connect 2 laptops

I'm getting a new laptop tomorrow, and want to bring it to my friend's to play games.

I already have a crossover cable, how easy is it to direct connect to him to play games?

After we connect our NIC's with the crossover cable, what would we need to do? Both using Windows XP.

Make sure you are both in the same workgroup in System Properties>Computer Name

That really has nothing to do with playing online games, so don't worry about it.

I will assume your game is operating on tcp/ip for it's network protocol, what you need to do is assign each machine a static IP address in the same subnet

for ex 192.168.1.1 for machine one
and 192.168.1.2 for machine two

you can use 255.255.255.0 for the mask and you don't have a gateway.

Once you have that done, you can test by pinging one machine from the other. If the ping is sucessful, it should work, but it would help to know what games.
