OK to use generic batteries with Dell notebooks?

I have a 8500 Inspiron with a bad battery. Dell has replacement batteries for about $170, which is way to high. I see generic ones on eBay for about $60-70...are there any issues with generic batteries and Dell notebooks? Nothing I should be worried about right?

Oh yeah...and how about refurbished Dell brand notebook batteries?

A lot of people use them with no problems. But around a year ago there were stories of exploding cell phones and the culprit was cheapo batteries people bought off ebay.

If you buy a good battery than chances are it's the same thing as Dell's, but without the Dell logo. Worst case is it makes your notebook explode and voids your warranty.

Has Dell been known to not honor the warranty in cases of explosion?

if they find out it was caused by a third party battery, than they might void it

it is actually probably safer to use a generic one over a dell one

This is Dells 2nd LARGE recall in about 3 years for the same problem. I would look for a reputable brand name and not just buy a generic white lable no name battery. Once you have a brand you should be able to google it and find reviews.
