Program to make animated gif files?

Hey I was wondering if anyone knew how I can make a quick capture from a avi file so it comes out like an animated gif file? I have Win DVD which allows a quick clip capture, but that only works for DVD files apparently. I want to make a avatar from a TV show I have as an avi file.

Thanks for any help...

I use Ulead GIF Animator 5 for things like that, though there may be some freeware floating around.

I make .GIFs all the time, and here is what I tell people when they ask me how I do it:

I use four different programs to do different things:

-DVD Shrink (to rip the clip from DVD)

-Virtual Dub (to take the .AVI clip and edit it down to only what I want to work with)

-Ulead GIF Animator (to take the edited .AVI clip and resize it, and convert it to .GIF)

-Animation Shop (to take the converted .GIF and do various things with it, like resize, crop, cull, and then save as the final .GIF file)

It sounds like a lot, but it only takes a few minutes to make one. There are easier ways, but I like to keep the file size as small as possible while still keeping it good quality. I also like to be exact about where the .GIF begins and ends.
