Desktop Wallpaper/colors won't display???

I can't seem to get my wallpaper(s) to display anymore, nor can I change the color of the background. The changes appear in the display properties preview window, but they are not reflected on the actual desktop ( I only see the stock blue background).

I've run Spybot and Regcleaner, but found nothing unusual. I did a system restore and that appeared to fix it for a day, then they were gone again.

I'm using a Shuttle XPC case/mb with 514ram, onboard graphics/audio, 100gb Seagate HDD, DVD R/RW running WinXP Pro Corporate with SP2.

Any suggestions?

there was a rather epic thread awhile back that dealt with something similar. not sure if it helps but was a fascinating read:

Off the top of my head, you've been rootkitted and someone is using RealVNC to remotely control your PC.
