Microphone plays only MP3s but not my voice, why?

I had this problem a while back but someone fixed it for me. Now I have it again and can't remember how. I seem to remember changing a box from MP3 to Line In/Mic. Help!

you want the microphone to record, correct? (not play like in playback?)
double click the speaker icon in your systemtray --> options --> properties --> recording --> ok --> select "Microphone" or "Line-in" depending on which port you have your actual microphone plugged into.

I have Windows 2000 so maybe it's different. There's a 'Mic Volume' and a 'Line In' but there's not really an option to "select" one of them. You can adjust the volume or mute them.

ps. It's for talking online to friends, if that matters.
