iTunes 5 released

http://engadget.com/entry/1234000030057785/
1:11pm - iTunes 5! Pretty much same display, but cleaned up. Can organize folders of playlists.

1:12pm - Search bar - can search just podcasts, just albums, etc. Search bar is also in music store. iTunes 5 autosyncs contacts and calendars from MS Outlook.

1:14pm - Smart Shuffle feature. “We’ve had a lot of people say our shuffle’s not random” (laughter) “We’ve actually added Smart Shuffle to make it less random. But it seems more random.” From the UI: “Smart shuffle allows you to control how likely you are to hear multiple songs by the same artist.” Reviews added to iTunes.

1:17pm - iTunes 5 demo. Steve is searching for some musician named “Dylan” in the store. Results layout is more GUI, layout of album covers by artist.
I can't even get into the itunes site right now. It's getting slammed.

Download available now: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download

New Features:
More streamlined look
New Search Bar is faster somehow
Parental Controls
Smart Shuffle
Support for the new iPodNano (mini replacement: http://www.apple.com/ipodnano )
Mobile Phone support, for iTunes on the Motorola ROKR E1 from Cingular
Syncs contacts with Outlook
Folders (I guess to organize your playlists into)

Probably more that I haven't read yet. Unfortunately, I have to wait until I get home to try it myself.

One thing not mentioned anywhere is that they also released Quicktime 7 final in conjunction with this, and the new iTunes supports VBR AAC encoding.

Man, is this update supposed to completely hose everything? I lost all my podcasts and had to completely reload all 4000 tracks on my iPod. I'm assuming I did something wrong when updating.

I'm assuming you're not a mac user, as the brushed metal look is almost universally derided. Personally, I don't mind the new look. It's cleaner, a bit more modern and takes up less screen space which is always a good thing IMO. It's kind of like a darker shaded version of the new unified toolbar used for the updated Mail app in Tiger. I'm not a fan of the jagged corners, and the placement of the volume controller, but I'll have it themed eventually anyway so I really couldn't care less.

In answer to your question, no, although I'm sure the old style will be skinned for those who prefer it.

As with anything, I got used to the old skin and it'll take a while to warm up to the new one.

No problems updating here either. Everything was where it was supposed to be.

I had no problems updating either.

I have a dumb question regarding iTunes in general, as I had 4.9 a total of 26 hours before upgrading to 5 (just got the iPod on Monday, was using J River Media Center with my now broken & returned Zen Xtra).

If you delete files in My Computer, not iTunes, how do you get the library to update and remove those files? For example, in J River, I'd add whatever files to my music partition, delete others, etc. Then there was an option in J River to update library. This would add any new files and remove any files that didn't exist anymore. I can't figure out where to do this in iTunes. The only thing I see is "add folder to library" or "Add file to library". No removal option. Do I have to manually remove those songs that no longer exist one by one?

Thanks!

nevermind: Yeah, pretty much. iTunes is designed to manage your library, not to adjust to you managing your library manually. Don't delete files outside of iTunes if you are going to use iTunes to manage the library.

Broken headphone jack? Since you returned it, sounds like you didn't have it for very long?

Yep, and when you have more songs, it becomes a bitch to find them. I wish that exclamation sign in that column was a sortable field.

If you deleted a ton of files manually then it's easiest just to delete everything from the iTunes library and then use the import function to bring in all the music on your pc again.

Oh... hell, alright.

Download this: http://otto.homedns.org/itunes/RemoveDeadTracks.txt
Change the extension to "js".
Open iTunes.
Double click the JS to run it. If your virus protection bitches at you, disable or otherwise bypass it.

Voila. All ! tracks will be removed.

If you just want to know the dead tracks without removing them, use this instead:
http://otto.homedns.org/itunes/FindDeadTracks.txt

It'll create a Dead Tracks.txt file for you to read.

Yeah it was the second Nomad I had. I bought it originally last Sept at Best Buy with a Product Replacement Plan. 5 weeks later the headphone jack went out on it. They exchanged it, keeping the plan intact. That one just crapped out (same problem) this week. I used the PRP and they gave me the $$ I paid for the Nomad and put it towards the 60GB iPod Photo.

I tried downloading this several times, but when I run the file, a popup tells me the installation file is corrupt. WTF?

Youtoo?

Same for me on Win2K. I did it several times, then even rebooted and tried again later. Haven't tried it today.

Not when you have many random files across many directories unchecked because your wife doesn't want to have them on her iPod and you don't feel like rearranging your entire structure to accomodate her.

That, and having to add back my podcast subs is the reason I haven't yet just blown away my existing installation to see if that would fix the problem that GW and I are having. (well and the fact that I'm afraid if I uninstall, I will lose access to iTunes completely)

Oh, and Otto, you rock.

Haven't tried them yet, but I'll make sure and grab them.
