Instant Message programs?

So if I want to use a instant message program I will need the same program the person I want to talk has?

Is there anything one should know before installing such a program security wise?

Are they all pretty much the same or is one head over heels better?

Trillian is the best I know of. You can chat with people on AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, etc on the free version.

If you want to connect to Google Talk (Jabber), you'd need the paid version.

on trillian, is there a way to find a buddy. i remember on aim you can do that by typing in their name or email address and it would tell you the aim name.

is there a way to do that on trillian? i don't want to have to install aim to do it, and i'm trying to find an old friend from college. thanks.

Also take a look at GAIM. It supports mutliple clients (even Jabber) and is also free.

I do see any way to do a search. It looks like you have to know their name in order to add them.

That was easy. Now I got my own little stupid aim and yahoo icons. yeah me.

GAIM is ok if you're just looking for a simple chatting program, but i noticed you had to download a different program if you were interested in audio and video chatting. I personally like Trillian's interface better, but GAIM does have the advantage of offering Jabber support for free.

I'm not sure about aim (I don't have one), but you can do icq user search using trillian just like the original client.

Another Trillian fan here. My biggest gripe with AIM is its insane usage of memory. At times, with no windows/conversations open, it would be using 30-60MB. Trillian uses a much more reasonable 10-15MB, and it logs to boot.

Is Trillian going to support Google Talk with their basic client, or just the Pro. Anyone know?

How does it work on the flip-side? Do you have to sign up with all the major IM services for your friends to contact you?

It supports it now with just the Pro. In the long run? You'd have to ask them. I doubt they'll be adding GTalk anytime soon, as GTalk is very, very beta.

after you set up your log in on Trillian, it will do the sign up automatically for you everytime you start the program.
