GMail accounts now freely available

Go to gmail.com and you can get a gmail account without an invite.

Downside: You currently must have a US cell phone. It sends a verification code to you via SMS.

I think they're trying to limit it to one per person, sort of thing. They don't people making accounts they won't actually use. I suspect that after this becomes widely implemented for all countries, they'll start cracking down on unused accounts or accounts that are used mainly for file storage and such.

Direct Link: https://www.google.com/accounts/SmsMailSignup1

Edit: Word on the "street" is that if you sign up for a "Google Account" using an existing email address, you can also get a GMail account without an invite. I have not tried it, but if you don't want to give up a cell number, it's worth a try: https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount/

It's a cool idea using the cell phone verification. The only problem is that not everyone has a cell phone. Hard to believe I know, but I have a couple of friends who do not. Will the accounts via invite thing still work?

it's not freely available, it's just somebody is willing to give you a invite if you have a cell phone.

i signed up through the website last night. if you have a cell phone, google will text message your invite code. i think those with a gmail account may still invite others to join (i may be wrong, however).

Yes... but that somebody would be Google. So it's sorta "freely available" in that you don't actually have to find somebody who'll give you an invite, yeah?

Yeah me too. I'm pretty sure a lot of people still have 50 left. Every time I gave away one or two it was back up to 50 the next day
