is my dvd burner dead?

is my dvd burner dead?

i was burning a cd & suddenly the burn process failed. now it wont even play a cd in media player or recognize any disc. what kind of stuff can i do to fix this? or is it dead? its a nec ND-3540A

I would say it is dead. But you could try hooking it up with a different ide cable and power cable, just to exhaust all your options. Also could try it in another pc...if you want to be really exhaustive.

What operating system are you using?
Doe sthe driv eshow up in Windows Explorer?
If so, in XP right click on the drive, and select Properties>Recording tab and place a check in the "Enable CD recording on this drive">Click OK
Re-Boot

If it still won't play a normal CD, then uninstall in Device Manager. Shut down System(No Power). Then Reboot and try playing another CD

Have you installed any buning software recently? What software are you using to burn?

Just some things to check.

im using xp, yeah i tried the uninstall thing too, still nothing. and i havent installed any new software for burning. i tried uninstalling & installing nero again which i use for burning. still no luck

I have question.... Yesterday I turned my PC on and my DVD drive was not showing up. It had power but the PC didn't see the drive. I restarted my PC and it was back. any ideas on what happen?
