battery use watching DVDs on laptop

Just curious, I have a Celeron 2.0 laptop which I like to watch DVDs on when I travel on airplanes. Since its over 2 years old, the battery isn't as fresh as it used to be. I can barely get in a full movie (approx 90-100 minutes) and so alot of movies I miss the endings until I can recharge...

If I can get the contents of the DVD on my harddrive, can I watch it that way instead? If so, will this use less battery as opposed to the DVD drive spinning a physical disc?

I just want to watch a full length movie and the only way is to use the least amount of battery possible.

i do that for my trips. either put the entire dvd on the hdd or convert to xvid if it's a bit longer and i'm low on space.

(no requests for how-tos to be on the safe side)

I think playing off the HD would use a bit less power
but getting it on the HD legally might be an issue, which would make the thread an issue

We're not going to discuss putting the DVD on the hard drive here. I don't know what's so hard to understand about our policy.
