Opinions on a Dell laptop

I don't know much about laptops so I wanted to see if I could get some opinions from you guys on this one.

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=19&l=en&s=dhs

It's a Dell Inspiron 1000 I believe.

It has a 2.2 Celeron processor and 512Mb RAM. It's $599, this is about the cheapest I've seen for one (although I would pay the extra $149 to upgrade to a DVD burner)

Anyone know anything about this one? Or of anywhere to look for a good affordable llaptop?

Hi there,

I got this very machine for a friend, refurb one. This is an ok laptopm for general use, word, excel, internet etc.

Not recommended for hard core gamers at all. The video card is only a 32mb one.

Mine came with a CD burner (actual was a DVD/CDRW) which was nice, paid $629 including tax, took the 1 year warranty for an extra $17.

I just looked on their Dell Outlet Notebook, saw one for $655 includes : Even though it states a CDRW on the webpage click the system and you'll see many time a CDRW is actual a CDRW with a DVD player.

yeah that sounds nice. Does it have built in G wireless? I want that because I already have a G wireless network set-up in my apartment.

Also look for some Dell coupons. They are issued quite frequently.

I have an Inspiron with Celeron and I can say sometimes it is slow as molassas, especially if you wanna run a browser, photoshop and MP3s at the same time or something like that. I wish I had splurged and gotten a P4 or something like that.

(Having said that, mine is not a 2.2 Celeron. It's 1 1/2 years old so the way Dell changes their configurations, it's a dinosaur)

I am 90% sure I am getting the Dell. So a coupon would be much appreciated.

I still need to know if it has built in G wireless. Thats the deciding factor.

edit: I see now in the specs it says 1350 internal wireless. Is that the same as G wireless?

And no I don't play PC games so that isn't a consideration.

From the link on the original post, it says:

"Dell Wireless 1300 External Wireless PC Card (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps) [add $29 or $1/month2]"

That has G ...

It does not come with an internal wireless card, you would have to plug one into the PCMCIA slot on the side.

You can get one for around $30 - $40.

I wish I could have told you earlier.

The coupon (Dell Big Bucks) expired last night (11/15/04). Go figure. It was on a catalog i received with my new dell in which they said i could win $5000. Instead it was $30.

No problem. Let's hope they put a few new coupons put there since it's close to christmas.

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...=i1150S1&s=dhs

Here's the one I'm getting (I hope) But I'm paying an extra $37 for the cd burner and an extra $22 for an internel 802.11 b/g wireless card. So $733, which I feel is a good price. Only problem is that right now they are throwing in upgraded 512 RAM, but that ends today so I may have to pay extra for that too.

boston,

that is a good deal, but go back to the home page and click on Small Business, then select laptops, then the inspiron 1150, click Customize, you will notice on this page the prices for upgrades are slightly different but you can also get a Free upgrade to a 40GB drive.

I bought HP's version of the Dell's Inspiron a few months ago. It had a 15in montior and was very, very heavy... if you intend to use the insprion as a desktop replacement, it is more than sufficent...

If you want to sit it on your lap while you watch tv, take it places, etc... I would suggest getting a smaller Dell like the 700m. I returned the HP and replaced it with a 700m and I am MUCH more happy with its smaller size and mass.

As noted above, it is well worth the extra $ to get a Pentium M instead of a celeron regardless of the computer you buy.

You should also buy the 3 year exteneded warranty from dell, as more than likely, something will go wrong.... if you wait, about 30 days after you buy it, you will get a postcard offering the extended warranty at a 50% discount....
