It's ridiculous. I'm thinking of going with Speakeasy ADSL (and spending another $100 on installation). Does anyone use them?

Mole177 11-12-04 12:27 AM

i dont understand that.

would you be able to explain that situation?

Breakfast with Girls 11-12-04 12:44 AM

I can, but it's not something you can fix. It's showing that nearly half of the packets that are sent out are being dropped or not even connecting at all... meaning in practice I have a 50/50 chance of actually getting a page when I click on a link... meaning Comcast's network sucks on an unbelievable scale.

Number of timeouts to post this message: 2

I'm just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good alternative high-speed Internet provider in the Seattle area, but since this was moved to Tech Talk I suppose I'll never get an answer.

Numanoid 11-12-04 12:50 AM

I'm on Comcast and get great speed and no dropped packets.

Roto 11-12-04 01:08 AM

I haven't had any problems with Comcast in my neighborhood. Here's my traceroute for what it's worth. I don't know anyone with Speakeasy. They used to use it where I worked, but cancelled it after hundreds of customers credit cards were compromised, but that was about 5 years ago. Most people I know are on Comcast or Verizon.

On Comcast and no problems here, no dropped packets either.

gcribbs 11-12-04 01:54 AM

No issue with comcast here either. Have you tried having them come out to see if they can fix the problem.

Any chance it is related to anything on your end?

I was having issues when I was using Zonealarm. The recent updates just prevented me from loading webpages some of the times. It looked like an issue with my connection at first.

Stopped using it and moved to another firewall and the problem disappeared.

Good Luck!

Mole177 11-12-04 01:54 AM

how do you perform a traceroute?

NeonGlow 11-12-04 02:14 AM

Type in the command prompt or the run box:

tracert "some website"

tjr2mental 11-12-04 10:03 AM

I do not seem to have problems with my connection, but when I do the tracert to dvdtalk.com I get two connections, and the rest time out. Weird.

Oh, I use Charter

wildcatlh 11-12-04 10:16 AM

I have plenty of problems with Comcast, but this isn't one of them.

Thanks for the tip. I do use ZoneAlarm but I never had that problem with Cox.

My gf has comcast, the connection was getting dropped so much, her modem wouldn't work at all...

1. called once, "they reset it" over the phone
2. problem contniued
3. called again, an older service guy cao out, said the connectors on the switch box for her condo floor were "shot" and he replaced them
4. no problem since

call, complain, demand satisfaction, repeat until satified

We've got Comcast here in Chicago, and we would lose our service quite often. The guys came out and told us we had split the signal off to too many locations around the house. We took a few off the line and it's much better.

jfoobar 11-13-04 06:45 PM

We currently have both Verizon DSL and Comcast cable running to my house and have been paying for both for the past few months. When I consolidate my wife's network and my own in the next few weeks, it will be Verizon that gets dropped, not Comcast. Comcast has been by far the more reliable of the two over this duration and has been noticeably faster an overwhelming majority of the time as well. There have been instances where my DSL has literally been slower than dial-up.
