Ink Jet Cartridge Refill Question?

I just used a Statitech refil kit for my epson 882C. Part of the refill process required that I punch in 3 plugs in the cartridge to create 3 holes for adding the ink.

What strikes me as odd is that the instructions say to leave the holes open after refilling. Do not cover them with anything, because then the cartridge won't print properly. So I've left the holes open.

I've used the cartridge since then and it is working fine, and so far the quality is the same as with the original ink. However, I'm thinking with those 3 holes the ink is going to evaporate quickly. Why can't I tape over the holes? After all, they originally had plugs in them.
