Help! My New Hard Drive is not Recognized by the Computer

I just installed a Maxtor ATA 160 GB hard drive. I could see the drive among the hardware device lists but the location is zero and the volume is zero, why is this? Please help. I have an AMD 1600 mghz, running on Windows XP Home Edition. Thank you.

You have to go into Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Disk Management and partition and format your drive in there.

It shows there as Disc 0, unallocated. What should I do next?

Did you partition and format, like X said?

There is no command for format or partition I could find. Where should it be? The drive says unknown and uninitialized.

Right-click on the white area showing the drive for your options.
