XP Pro users...AVG or Avast?

I'm looking for a good free A/V utility since my Norton has just expired today. which is the better program to use on XP Pro? or are they both fine? I noticed that Avast failed on Pro http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archiv....xml?avist.xml but AVG http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archiv...ts.xml?avg.xml passed.

which program releases virus definitions more rapidly? I used to use AVG about 1 1/2 years ago but it seemed like new defs. only came out every 2 weeks or so. is this a common thing?

another question, for those that use Avast, how user friendly is it? if a virus pops up is it just a simple click to repair/delete? my wife uses the pc too and I would hate to have her pick up something online and have to leave it on my pc until I get home or something.

I did use AVG 6.0+ Free Version and it gave frequent updates...no problems in XP Pro SP2
I currently use Avast and haven't had any issues. Gives frequent updates. I don't recall if it detects a virus if it will remove and/or repair on the fly, though.

Sorry, I couldn't be of more help

You may also want to to AntiVir @ http://www.free-av.com/

Kaspersky (sp?) is another good scanner, (free??)

I've never used Avast, but I've been using AVG on XP Home for a couple years now without complaint. I can't say how often they update their definitions; I do it manually about once a month, or right before I run something that I think may be shady.

if I decide to try out Avast and decide I don't like it will it be hard to completely remove it from my system? I noticed I had the date wrong and my Norton A/V doesn't expire until the 7th so I wanted to check out something else in this time. and if I don't find something else I like I'll just upgrade to Norton 05.

I've been using AVG on my XP Pro for awhile now, haven't had any problems. Updates seem to come regularly and the program updates itself without restarting.

is it ok to actually use both(AVG and Avast) at the same time or would that be a bit too much?

I run avg and Norton at the same time. Surprisingly AVG seems to pick up on viruses a little sooner

Weird, i couldn't get AVG to work on my wife's XP computer, so went with Avast [which I don't like as much, but hey, it's free].
On my machine I run AVG always, and run two others on-demand weekly. I'v enoticed AVG updates/finds stuff faster than Norton as well.

The GUI looks better. Now, I just have to get used to where everything is.
