Dead hard drive

My 120 gig hard drive has bitten the dust just over one year after I bought it. It sits there and clicks whenever it's trying to be accessed, and doesn't do anything more than that.

Is there any hope of recovering anything off that drive?

Please, no comments on backups as hindsight is 20/20.

Thanks,

Put it in a plastic bag and stick it in the freezer for a couple of hours. Take it out, hook it back up while it's cold and see if you can get anything off of it.

I appreciate your help. The freezer method has not produced any results.

I have had the drive in an auto reboot sequence for 2 days now and nothing....I can't even get it to load up once.

What are the chances of taking it apart and putting the media into a working drive?

Just curious

I did this successfully 2 out of 10 times, but that was with identical drives and back when 250MB was huge. I'd heartily recommend SpinRite, which I also used back in the day with great success.

Without a clean room, pretty much zero.

There are services that will do that though.

When I froze my drive, I only did it for around 15 minutes and it would last (readablility) for about 5-10 minutes. Maybe you over-froze it.

Would popping it into an external enclosure be feasible?

You may not be able to boot from it, but you might still be able to recover the data.

The free version of EasyRecovery from Ontrack will let you know if there is any recoverable data on the drive. I've used it once and it worked pretty well with a drive that crashed at work.
