What can I get for $1000.00? Advice needed.

Hey there,

Here's the deal. I just got a $1000.00 bonus at work and I wanna throw it all at a PC and a printer.

Basically, I want it for internet, word processing, gaming (Sims2, baby!), and some graphics work (photoshop, illustrator, etc.).

Also, it needs to have an airport card (wireless internet card?)

Just need a basic color/photo printer. Nothing too fancy.

So, what should I get and where can I get the best price? Any good current deals at Best Buy, CC, CompUSA, etc?

Oh, yeah. I already have a flatscreen monitor so that can be optional (it might be nice to have two monitors, though).

Thanks,
jay77

Holy cow. A grand? That's more than way enough. You can get a Dell with a monitor for $500 buck. I'd go to Dell.com and see what they have. You could get a pretty good system for that. If you build it yourself you will get an even better system.

Check out gotapex.com for the latest Dell deals.

$1000 will get you a very nice computer and printer.

Airport card? Isn't that for Macs? Buying a Mac might limit your purchasing power.

You can build a pretty good machine or even buy one from Dell for that much.

Yeah, for $1000 there are much better ways to go than with Dell.

I also believe that airport cards are strictly for Macs? Please clarify if you want a Mac before we all jump in with our AMD (i'm guessing) ideas.

And do you want to build your own, or just have one sent to you?

OK. What does that mean and where can I buy it.

Seriously though, to clarify, I just want to have wireless internet. My roomate already has it and we are going to share. I just want the computer to be equipped for wireless internet.

That being said, I do not want a Mac.

I would like to build a computer but have never done this before. Any tips? Are there any websites out there that guide you in doing this?

Thanks.

I went to newegg and pretended I had $1000 to build a kickass gaming rig. I didn't research the video card all that much and if I was really building a system I probably wouldn't go for a 64-bit processor yet, but otherwise it was easier to get up to $1000 than I had thought.

AMD Athlon 64 2800+, 512KB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor - Retail $146.00
CHAINTECH nVIDIA GeForce FX5900XT Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "SA5900X" -RETAIL $169.00
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Black, Model ND-3500A BK, OEM $78.00
CHAINTECH "VNF3-250" nForce3 250 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL $83.00
Samsung Black 1.44MB 3.5inch Floppy Disk Drive, Model SFD321B/LBL1, OEM Drive Only $9.00
SAMSUNG 160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model SP1614C, OEM Drive Only $97.00
Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard & Wheel Mouse Optical Value Pack PS/2 102keys -OEM $28.00
OCZ Premier Value Series, Dual Channel Kit 184-Pin 512MB(256MBx2) DDR PC-3200 - Retail $88.00
Antec Solution Series Quiet Black Mid Tower Case with 350W Power Supply, Model "SLK2650-BQE" -RETAIL $65.00
TRENDware/TRENDnet 11Mbps Wireless PCI Ethernet Adapter, Model TEW-228PI $23.99
Epson Stylus R200 Color Inkjet Printer, 15 PPM, 5760 x 1440 DPI, Color/B& W $85.00
Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack SP1a - OEM $141.00

SUBTOTAL: $1012.99
Shipping: $51.91
TOTAL (no tax in MI) $1064.90

not sure if this will work if i link to my shopping cart... but I tried to configure a similar machine at Dell and it came to over $1400. There are plenty of budget systems at dell, but integrated graphics are not what you want in a gaming machine and the default hard drives are surprisingly small.

(the above quoted price does include a 17" LCD display, but you only save $40 if you turn it down... maybe you could sell it if you don't want it?)

edit: hmm, my link only shows the machine before modifying it... but add XP pro, bigger hard drive, etc, and it gets a bit pricier.

Keep in mind that Dell is going to offer you tech support. If you build your own machine (do you know how to build your own machine?) you're going to be on your own. You could configure a very nice machine with PCI-X graphics at Dell for $1000. It wouldn't get every single ounce out of your dollar but you can bet your ass that everything was designed to work perfectly out of the box and you wouldn't be left wondering why your floppy drive light was constantly on and the system wouldn't boot.

Ok. I guess I want to just buy a dell or other pre-made system. Can anyone suggest and specific models and links to where I can order them?

My brother ended up buying a pretty decent Dimension 4700 for a little more then a grand... something along the lines of a P4 3.2, 1 GB of RAMn, 160GB Hard Drive, 17 inch monitor. Video Card was a little weak with only an X300 and the monitor is just a cheap CRT, but not too too bad. Check places like techbargains.com for coupon codes and deals on systems that come out every week.

go to a bargain site like the ones listed above..

i prefer bensbargains.net and techbargains.com and they almost always have a listing on the way to get the best bang for your buck from dell.. at any time..

be sure to use the dvdtalk affiliate link to make the purchase!

Okay, so what's the latest/greatest in gaming? I've been wanting to build a box that will play any of the latest games at max performance but I'm not currently hip on what the best Video Card/Processor combo to get is. Understand that the last time I built a gaming rig, 3dfx had the high end cards.

Price: Not a problem. I'm rich, biatch!

Best Video Card is between Nvidia's Geforce 6800 Ultra and ATI's Radeon x800XT Platinum. Both are about 500 bucks A better 'value' is the 6800 GT, which shares the same features as the Ultra, only at a lower clockspeed (and pretty much all GT's can be overclocked to Ultra speeds with ease, i know mine is ).

For a gaming rig, i'd say the Athlon 64 FX-53 is the fastest right now.
