How to Keep AOL username for AIM when quiting aol?

Is this possible? AOL said that once I cancel my account I lose my username until I sign up with them again. Can anyone help here? I'd like keep my AOL username for AIM. I've canceled my account as of 10/1/04. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Steve

They're lying to you. The AIM name is separate from the AOL login name.

Why did you quit 15 minutes later? I signed up once for their free 30 days while I was waiting for myDSL to get hooked up. I then quit AOL at the end of the 30 days. I hated AOL. Didn't like their interface at all.

Go to netscape.com and sign up for an email account and I think you can use it with AIM then.

I cancelled AOL over six years ago and still have my AIM handle. Dunno what it is with them claiming that you lose the name if you quit the service, unless the policy has changed since then. Then again, their customer service is atrocious for something that hasn't(?) been outsourced. IIRC, you can sign up with such-and-such a name if you're just using AIM, and part of the incentive is that if you decide to become an AOL subscriber, you get to keep that name as well. (Well, duh.)

Just a warning, it doesn't work anymore. I had an AOL account. I cancelled years ago, but continued to use that as my AOL IM. I reactivated the account for a freebie account for a few days, then cancelled. I lost the use of that AOL IM name when I cancelled again. I guess they aren't doing that anymore, according to the AOL rep I spoke to. They wouldn't give me my AOL IM name back that I had for about 8 years.

You should be able to use the standalone AIM application at http://www.aim.com/get_aim/win/latest_win.adp
and sign on. It may tell you that the username is already taken, though. I have the standalone and I can sign on and I never have used(paid for) their "service"
