Problem with Disk Cleanup & Defragmenter.

Hey Everyone,

I've been using my pc a lot for the past few months to make backups of some of my dvd's, so I'm constantly creating, burning, and then deleting large image files. Because of this, I use the Windows Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter Utilities often to consolidate all the scattered space left behind by constantly creating and deleting the large dvd files, in order to keep everything up to speed.

However, starting about a week ago, neither utility will work. Disk Cleanup stalls at "compressing old files", and Defragmenter just stalls completely. Both Utilites have always worked fine before, so I don't know what the cause of this may be. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be or how to fix it?

The only things I can think of that may have triggered this is:

1.) Just before this started happening, I made a large number of backups (around 10), burned them, and then deleted the image files. After that neither utility would work (as described above). I don't think this is it, as I have done this before, with no problems afterwards.

2.) Around the same time, I installed "Bearshare" - I don't see why that would affect it, but that's the only system change I can think of.

I am using Win XP home edition.

Thanks for any help,

Roy

Mine stalled too & I downloaded a trial version of diskeeper & it defragged mine with no problems. after that, it has run faster and not been a problem to use the Windows built-in defragmenter. I think mine (and yours) may have become too fragmented for the Windows version to work.

Good luck to you!

Here's a link to Diskeeper: http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/d...er.asp?ad=go12

Thanks for the link, I'll give it a shot. It's downloading now (18mb on 56k dialup - ouch).

From your post, after you defragmented using Diskeeper, it sounds like you were able to use the built in windows defragmenter again. or did you purchase Diskeeper and continue to use that?

Did you have the same problem with the cleanup utility, and did this correct that also?

Thanks for the help,

Roy

You should run ScanDisk before running Defrag. Defrag gets all upset over bad sectors. Neither likes being interrupted by processes running in the system tray (those damn things that launch automatically). Either close them all manually or restart in SAFE mode (they don't launch).

Download this reg file and read the readme file included. This does fix the compressed old files in the disc cleanup utility.

Description:
On some computers, Disk Cleanup in Windows XP hangs during the “compress old files” phase, locking up the computer.

Some versions of BearShare contain spyware and/or adware. These parasites are known to wreak havoc in computers.
What version of BS do you have? Have you used Adaware to check for spyware.

Scandisc and defrag cause less headaches for open programs while running when using XP. Win 9x always had problems with running programs, including hidden ones not in the system tray. You may want to try running chkdsk and defrag in Safe mode just to see if the program is corrupt or a parasite and virus could be causing the issue you have.

I took your suggestions - edited the registry file and downloaded diskeeper (great program). Everything worked fine and I'm back up to speed.

Thanks so much!
