Information and Pre-Check list on SP2 while your waiting.....

Before installing SP-2 or if you have issues related to installing Windows XP SP-2, click the link http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm

This check list is not for everyone. This checklist is intended to cover the majority of problem encountered while attempting to install a Service Pack. This checklist is designed for Windows XP, however most steps can apply to any operating system.

Changed 9 AUGUST 2004

This is the preferred way to get Windows XP Service Pack 2
Starting 16 August 16 2004, Windows XP computers set to Automatically Update (AU) will start receiving Service Pack 2. Not all computers, just a limited number a day. This will continue until all Windows XP computers set to AU have SP-2 installed.
To set for AU:
Right click My Computer, click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab.
Check "Automatic (recommended)"
Click OK and follow prompts.
If you pay for bandwidth or you are limited on internet time, you may be better off using one of the options listed in Step 1 below. Otherwise AU may be the best and easiest way to get SP-2 installed.
If SP-2 is needed immediately, follow the steps listed below

***If you are installing Windows XP Service Pack 2***
"At 1.6mb there is a pause in the download while update.exe runs an inventory
to figure out exactly what files need to be downloaded, based on the system
configuration. The delay for this inventory phase can be as little as 3
minutes, and as great as 30 minutes (or more) on a slow machine. Once
inventory completes, download and installation will continue."
Quoted from Don Cottam
Microsoft Corporation, Software Update Services

If you have a Prescott CPU, STOP and check with the manufacturer before continuing. Installation of Windows XP SP-2 may not be possible at this time.

The steps in red should be accomplished just before the installation. The other steps may only be necessary if there are problems. If there are installation issues, perform all steps.

Try installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 this way:

1. Do not use Express Installation.
You can order the Service Pack 2 CD. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...efault810.mspx

Download the Network Installation from here:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a (be sure to select the correct language)
Download Windows XP Service Pack
DSL takes about 20 minutes, if you do not have high speed access, get a friend to D/L SP2 for you.
Then burn it to a CD and keep for the future and sharing with friends.

2. It is best to resolve current issues BEFORE installing Service Packs.

3. Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case if you do not already have a back-up plan.

4. Check to make sure you have all updated drivers. Also be sure any mission critical software is supported by SP2

5. You should have at least 2gb free space (Less than half that is needed for Windows XP SP2, but if you are that close, you need to start looking for ways to free space or add another hard drive.)

6. Check with computer manufacturer to insure compatibility with Windows XP SP2, there were a few models with SP1 where the company has said wait while the manufacturer implemented a fix. This is especially important if you have something other than a Desktop such as a laptop, Tablet PC etc. Also see "Known issues caused by Windows XP Service Pack 2"
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm on the link.

7. Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online.
Sometimes it is a good idea to run more than one to ensure nothing is missed:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Trend Micro House Call

Symantec Security Check

8. Download CWShredder.
Be sure to update to the latest version.

9. Check this link:
Do you have parasites?

10. Run Ad-AwareSE (free version)
Update if you already have it.
Update if you already have it.
You may want to use both of these tools to be sure all spyware is gone.

Make sure all tools used in the above four steps are updated within the last few days. Do not assume recently downloaded/installed tools are up to date.

11. If you ever installed XP-Antispy, it disables a dll Windows XP SP-1 needs, so just in case:
Type "regsvr32.exe licdll.dll" ENTER
"DllRegisterServer in licdll.dll succeeded." should be displayed
Type "regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll" ENTER
"DllRegisterServer in regwizc.dll succeeded." should be displayed
NOTE: You can safely use this procedure to resolve this issue even if XP-AntiSpy is not installed on your computer.
(Service Pack 1 Setup Cancelled" Error Message When You Install Windows XP SP1)

12. Run chkdsk to check file system.

13. Perform Disk Cleanup (all boxes checked except Compress old files)

14. Perform Disk Defragmentation.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/Disk Defragmenter

15. Ensure correct date, time and don't forget Time Zone .

16. Disconnect all peripherals (camera, scanner, printer etc)

When you are ready:
17. Create a Restore Point in System Restore

18. Go to MSCONFIG, make note of what is checked in Start-Up tab then uncheck all in Start-up tab.

19. Reboot the computer
Login as an Administrator, disable ALL unnecessary applications including antivirus.
Do NOT touch any keys during the process unless necessary.

20. Install SP2 by double clicking on it, follow the prompts.

21. After SP2 install is completed, reboot, defrag.

22. Go back to MSCONFIG and recheck what you unchecked.

23. Reboot

Hope this helps pass time while you are waiting for AU to download.

EDITED: Adding the following information...

Also, If you have installed any software that modifies standard system components, eg to give a different boot screen, or even custom theme, uninstall it before installing either service pack.

DVDPOLIZEI-I noticed that too. It installed MS Video Drivers!
