Lend me your...expertise...ipod, iriver or dj

I've narrowed my choices down to the 20GB version of these products i just cannot make up my mind. I was hoping all of you will be able to help. Thanks.

iPod

But then again some here would label me a Mac fan-boy! I have a 15G third generation one and I love it. Plus iTunes is a great piece of software to use to sort your playlists and keep track of everything.

I see you don't have the Creative Nomad Zen on your list....have you considered it? It's the best of the bunch as far as I'm concerned, and it's much cheaper than an iPod, to boot.

I love my 30GB Zen NX.

if you are going the cost route, don't buy an ipod. if you are going ease of use, quality and design, buy an ipod.

I have never owned a Mac product, and do not currently own a hard-disk based mp3 player.

But if I were going to get one, I would probably be getting an ipod.

I would disagree w/ the performance comment. The new ipods are pretty much comparable to every other mp3 player out there.

I am a lifelong PC user, and I just bought an iPod and I have to admit...I should've gotten one a lot earlier. It's design and intuitive controls blow the other players out of the water.

and for $299 for the new 20 gigger, it's comparable to other players of the same quality.

I'd still rather pay $60 less and get 10 more gigs (or even $50 less for 20 more gigs) and get a Zen Xtra. (Price quotes from Froogle)

I'm not gonna say the iPod isn't nice looking...it is. But, to me anyway, they're just not worth the extra cost, when you can easily get much more for much less.

iPod has tons of third party software and accessory support, the new models have better battery life and features and itunes is a great piece of desktop software.

iPod would be my choice. It is dominating the HD MP3 player market for a reason.

When people say this, I wonder if you've used one for more time than in just tinkering with it at the electronics store.

I'm also in the market and from what I can gather so far the iPod just isn't priced right for me. I noticed this morning a 30gb player made by Polaroid (Juke Jam) for $189 on ecost.com. It might truly stink, but that's more in line to my thinking.

I had researched quite a bit, and narrowed it down to the Iriver, Rio Karma, and an Ipod.

Ipod: Tons of accessories, cool look, games, contacts, most support, BUT the most $$ and less than great battery life and only plays back MP3 and ACC.

Rio: Flac support plus WMA, Etc..., gapless playback, small size, great support, but funky size, Detected like a USB hard drive (no software needed, this was huge for me!), BUT only 20gigs (I was looking at 40gigs)

Iriver: Plays WAV, WMA, MP3, etc...Built like a tank, great display, records w/built in mic or from line in or digital in/out, Detected like a USB hard drive, 14 hours (really) battery life, GREAT SOUND! BUT so-so support (firmware promises made and broke)

I went with the Iriver and have been VERY happy. Yes, it's no Ipod, and I sometimes dig all the cool accessories the Ipod has, but I get 2 days of playback without a charge and my sound quality is better than the Ipod.

What can any of you tell me about the Dell DJ?

I really don't like how the iRiver looks or feels but that's just me. The nomad didn't get such a good review on that PC Mag article.

Arrgh! Why is it so hard trying to spend money?

Really? The review looks quite favorable to me. As far as cons, they mention that it's a little bit big and heavy - but in reality, it's not bad at all. Then again, they're talking about the 60GB Xtra - I have the 30GB NX.

I honestly don't know much about the Dell DJ as I've never used it. My point is about getting the most for your money, though. And with what you'd pay for the 20GB Dell, you can get at least 10GB more with a Zen.

I'm just saying, the best bang for your buck is with a Zen.

And I got mine back in june before any magazine giving me any advice.

Really, I love it, and if they get their act together with the firmware, it will easily be the best player on the market.
