Dealing with server worm requests from Asia

One of my servers was getting slammed big time. In reviewing the IPs, it was mainly Korea and just some worm looking for something to exploit. I was told it was looking for a MS server opening and since I am Linux, it will not find it... but the requests were in the hundreds of thousands and brought this server to it's knees.

We put in a small block to all IPs (entire ranges) from that region which stopped 90% of them. The remaining IPs would require me to start blocking more individual IPs and this is not hurting me now.

But the downside, I cut off people who use my server in Australia and surrounding areas.

What is the best long term solution for this? Will it just go away?

Sounds like you could use an intelligent router/firewall that analyzes repetitive hits and isolates your network from the IPs doing that.

Unfortunately that type of hardware is probably out of the range of what you'd want to spend. I don't know if that functionality is available in affordable firewall software though.
