Liteon dvd burner hack to dual-layer/8x

Slashdot ran a story yesterday about some hacked firmware for the Lite-on 415S/815S to be dual layer burners.

here's the link to the story:

Yes, it was expected that this particular drive would be hackable to dual-layer. It was a late introduction by LiteOn that most people were unhappy they got since they wanted the 411 and 811 models. IIRC the 815 isn't even a LiteOn , it was the same drive as the 8x Sony. Or the other way around.

Other way around, Sony uses rebranded Lite-Ons

Doesn't writing to dual-layer DVDs also require getting your DVD burning software up recognize such DVD burner drives?

Oh well, here I am with a LiteOn 411S. Guess by the time DL media becomes affordable, it would be time to buy a new, proper, unhacked DL drive anyway.

You can make your 411S into an 8x but it's hardly worth it. I haven't bothered myself.

there were rumors that my pioneer 106 would be hackable to dual layer.. but I really havent been paying much attention lately

anyone know if this has been done yet?
although, pioneer isnt the type of company i could see releasing a firmware update that might hard their current sales.

So, if I do this firmware upgrade to my 451S (which has had its firmware upgraded to burn at 8x, I guess that's the 851S firmware), I will definitely need to upgrade my Nero to the latest version for it to recognize the new firmware from the 451S and to allow it to burn DL DVDs?
