HTML question: backgrounds

When making a large background I recall that you can use a lower res version sa a preload to fill the space while the full version loads. How does this work again?

Circa 1996, I think.

I don't think anybody does that anymore.

Ah well. I was going all retro. Still, anyone know the code? I know lowsrc for IMG tags but not for background.
