how to covert .avi file to play in a dvd

I hope someone can help me

i'm trying to covert an .avi file to play in a dvd player . I seen it done before but i don't know what program to use. I have a couple avi files that i want to record to a cd-r and play them on a stand alone dvd player. I tried Easy cd creator but couldn't get it going.

any suggestions would help

thanks in advance.

If you're going to put them on a CD for play in a DVD player, you'll need to convert to VCD format first. A program like TMPGEnc would do that for you. But, if you have an older DVD player: it might not play VCD.

Check out http://www.videohelp.com for all kinds of helpful articles and tools.

If you have something like sonicDVD or Roxio DVD wave, you can do it. Don't know anything that is freeware that will do it. Look at videohelp.com for some ideas.

one thing watch your codecs. DIVX avi for instance has such a large audio file it will fill a disc with a small video.

Eazy VCD (yes thats how to spell it) www.eazyvcd.tk is the best one I have found and it includes TMPGEnc. If the file is a DIVX avi you may have to use Virtual dub as well to convert the audio to a wav file, but even then it is fairly simple to use.

I've been trying different options for months and I'd suggest just going with a modded XBox or one of the several DVD players that have been released recently that play divx. The conversion process is not worth the hassle due to the file sizes and time required for conversion.

I found TMPGEnc, a free program, pretty easy to use. You have to run the .avi file through it to make an mpeg file, then burn it as a VCD. Lots of info and links for tools can be found at vcdhelp.com.
