how to get a pc and two macs wirelessly networked together peacefully?

i'm about to make a move back to the city where broadband is actually available (it isn't out here in the woods), and my girlfriend is coming with me. i have a pc running windows xp, and she has an ibook running osx that she got last year.

we've been sharing dial up via ethernet cable (don't laugh), with me dialing up and her leeching it from me. as far as i know, we just plugged in the ethernet cable and it worked. but what we want to do when we move is get a wireless network set up so she can roam around the new place and not have to be within 15 feet of my computer. i have never done anything like this before, so i don't have much insight to how i'd do this.

i know she can buy the airport wireless card, but what would i need? would it be better to get the whole airport system, or something like a linksys wireless thingy? eventually i was thinking about getting the ps2 broadband adaptor too, and she may possibly bring her old imac. we'd also like to be able to root around in each others hard drives for mp3s and such. whats the simplest way to do this without getting too expensive? also, any suggestions to an easy way to protect the network from any meanies?

any help would be much appreciated!

while looking at how much airport cards were, i found the airport express, which seems like a good solution. now all i need is wireless pci card reccomendations! except of course the whole filesharing question, if anyone can help with that, that would be great.
