Don't know if they've been around long enough for people to have strong opinions yet. I've had good experiences with Lacie drives so you may want to chek out their dual-layer burner.

Personally I would hold off on getting a new one just yet. But if you have the absolute desire to buy one now, I would go with a Plextor.

I know you're not in the U.S., but here you can find the NEC 2500 at newegg.com for $65 U.S. It's a well-reviewed single-layer burner that becomes dual layer with a quick flash of the firmware.

The model 2510 replaces it, at about $85, and is dual-layer out of the box.

Newegg carries both burners in three colors: beige, black or silver.

Dual Layer discs are $15 a pop, so it may be a little while before they drop down to the $1< mark. But the DL burners do single layer as well, so you could use that in the meantime while you wait for the price drop.

Boy, did that price drop like a rock! I paid ~ $95 for it just 4 months ago.

At least I lucked out in that it's one of the most easily flashable Single --> Dual Layer burner out there and most heavily tested one as well.

Looks like newegg has a one-day sale for the DL NEC2510 for $79. Ends at 4PM PST today if you must have one now. I'll wait a while to see how media pricing is and for the speeds higher than the current 2.5x.

Flashing is easy, just download the file and double click it; the program installs itself.

Personally, i think if an actual dual layer burner is only like 15 bucks more i'd get that over a hacked firmware simply for waranty purposes.

the nec2510 is a good drive
no burner related issues (the coasters I've had Im 95% sure were purely due to buggy software locking up my system during the burn) and I'm using it on a 5-6 year old system

If you also read the review from cd freaks they mention that the laser in the designed DL drives are calibrated much more to increase accuracy of burns. Whereas with a hacked firmware upgrade you could be burning coasters (and expensive coasters at that).

Actually they're $14 ($69 for a five-pack). Then again their cheapest shipping rate is $12 for FedEx Express saver.
