fixing dual boot

I have a dual boot setup w/ 98 & XP - but after converting my XP partition to NTFS 98 wouldn't boot up anymore.. so I converted back to FAT32 but still no go.. I tried using the boot menu to load up in safe mode, bootlogging, whatever.. but it's still the same.. it just goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top left.. I thought I could just reinstall 98 but then that might not let XP boot up.. so I'd have to run the recovery console and hope that'll fix it.. any other options before I try this?

Get a win98 bootdisk with the sys.com utility. At the C prompt, do a sys a: c:

This will make the computer win98 bootable. Next, boot from the XP CD and run the Recovery Console. At the Recovery Console, run bootcfg /rebuild
