My OS has died! (Win ME)

When my friend boots his laptop, the screen says: Operating system not found.

He is running Win ME.

There is lots of important data on it and he hopes not to lose it. Is there anything he can do to get it running again? He doesn't have a boot disk or a copy of the OS.

Thanks in advance...

You can download a boot disk at www.bootdisk.com.

My recommendation to your friend is that he rolls back to Windows 98.

Yeah, take this as an opportunity to switch the OS to *anything* besides ME.

As long as we are giving advice, if he has data that he doesn't want to lose, then he should start backing it up.

Another option would be to pull the hard drive and stick it as a slave in another PC. You can buy adapters for notebook drives so that it'll work with a desktop's IDE cables.

Then Ghost the drive and also just pull off the necessary data. If you can't restore the OS, at least you'll still have the data which you can then move to the freshly installed drive.

Depending on the specs of the computer I'd recommend a fresh install of Win2k or XP
