Please help me choose a UPS unit

Hello, Guys,

I'm looking to buy a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) but I'm hitting a brick wall with so many choices and brands so I thought maybe someone in this forum could give me some recommendations. Here are my system specs:

Athlon XP 2000+
1 Gig 2100PC RAM
4 Hard Drives
1 CD-RW
1 DVD-RW
350 Watt Power Supply
Nvidia GeForse4 Ti4200 8X with 64MB of RAM
5 Case cooling fans
17" CRT Monitor

I don't need the computer to run a lot of time on the UPS about 5-10 minutes will do.

A few models I looked at are:

APC Back-UPS ES 500 $60
APC Back-UPS ES 725 Broadband $100
Energizer 600VA $90

Thank you in advance for all the help.

I don't trust battery back-ups... but APC is the most trusted maker of them.

I've used many brands but the best I've found currently for the money and features has been the Belkin. This 800VA model can frequently be found for around $60 after rebate.

I got that one and the 1200VA model from Best Buy and use them on a couple servers. They interface with serial or USB to your computer and can automatically shutdown that machine and any others on the network you specify.

They have seamlessly transferred to supplying power during outages and even have a female voice telling you what's going on as well as popup messages.

Their automatic shutdown works well too. I have my machine set to shutdown in 5 minutes and I have a higher power draw in the computer the 800VA model is connected to than you do. I haven't tried it for 10 minutes though.

I'll second X's post about Belkin! I have the 800VA version and I really like it. I bought it to replace a DOA OptiUPS 600VA (viewsonic) that I had used since 1998.

I need to get a small one for my projector, so this post was timely as a reminder.. thanks!

Thank you, guys, for the advice. I hadn't looked at the Belkin UPS units but they seem to be very good for the price. The 800VA has Automatic Voltage Regulation, which is what I'm mostly interested in and it's not terribly expensive.

I will check it out in the stores tomorrow

Thank you.
