Are you wanting a firewire card to install in your PC, or a firewire cable? If you need a cable or want to use USB, you do know that Apple makes a USB 2.0 & Firewire combo cable for the iPod, right?

The iPod Dock Connector to FireWire and USB 2.0 Cable offers Windows PC customers up to 480Mbps data transfer for quickly loading an entire music library on iPod or iPod mini. Connect the FireWire cable up to the iPod or iPod mini power adapter to charge while syncing. Compatible with iPod mini and iPods with dock connector only.

I don't know about earlier iPods, but all 3rd generation iPods come with firewire cables. I just plug it into my PC, and it syncs.

Yeah, I have a third gen Ipod and it comes with a firewire cable. The USB cable you have to buy separately, is that what you need? Apples online store should have it.

Shouldn't a computer be in the equation somewhere?

G3 iPods are the only ones with a dock connector (and dock, of course). Earlier ones only have the firewire connection. The cable sonicflood pointed you to only works for the G3/dock iPods.

I can't find one now, but I'm sure I've seen that USB cables exist for the older iPods. If I were you I'd just get one of the Firewire cards you found in your first post. It's much faster than USB.
