Looking for a free program to erase a hard drive.

I have a bunch of old Hard Drives sitting around my house and I would like to give them to my local school. I need a program what will wipe them clear. What is out there that is FREE!

The information would still be on the drives. I need to wipe them clean with 1's and 0's. I found this program http://www.cyberscrub.com/ but its only a 15 day trial. I would like a freeware program.

If they're only WD and Maxtor HDs then download the drive utility from their support websites for each because both programs have the ability to write zeros and ones.

Otherwise check these out:
KillDisk: http://www.killdisk.com
Autoclave v0.3: http://staff.washington.edu/jdlarios/autoclave/
Darik Boot and Nuke: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dban/

Collected links from older thread.

Eraser 5.7 is a very good free disk cleaning program. It will make a Nuke disk floppy and run in windows to allow you to wipe the unused portion of your hard drive.

There is a tool called HDprepar (sic) that was created for preparing a hard drive for use in a modded Xbox. All it does is zero a drive, but there is an option to just zero the first 4096 sectors since that's all that is needed for installing it in an Xbox. It is freeware of course.

Delete everything then fill it up with porn, the happy hackers will be happy that they found the porn and you have nothing to worry about.

Not a bad idea.

I had a new drive go out on me after I put a bunch of proprietary stuff on it. I did the freezer trick and got the drive up again and reformatted and then filled the drive up with some huge video files to replace the sensitive stuff.

Just use for format command with the arguement that makes it unrecoverable or doa low level format with the HD utility from manufacturers site (that can take a while to do though).

Sticking a wrapped-up drive in the freezer for some hours and then putting the cold drive back onto the computer to temporarily solve a spin-up/head-calibration problem so you can access the drive.

This thread was exactly what I was looking for Just erased my HD using the Nuke disk (couldn't get it to work using just the Darik link, so used the disk image included with Eraser). DoD wipe took ~2 hours 45 minutes for a 12 gig drive.
Thanks all.

Another vote for Eraser 5.7. It's good for quick porn purges, too since it integrates into the Explorer shell.

I have found Autoclave to work very well. You have multiple options to choose from, but depending on what you chose, it could take a while to write all of those 1's and 0's. Below is a link:

NOTE: Make sure you are 100% sure you want the information wiped, because there is no going back. ENJOY!
