Please Help! Several Problems with my Dell.

OS: Win 98

1. I CANT SHUT DOWN! Everytime I try i get a message telling me to Cancel,End Task, or Wait.Ive tried all three options and still cant shut down.

2.I cant acess many pograms/documents thru the start button.
For instance, whenever I try to go to my Control Panel,it freezes the whole task bar. Now I cant go to my Documents from the Start button.

3. My Documents have also been acting up.

4.My internet text is HUGE.I go to endosing and then user defined which works. But it always reverts back to huge text.

I might have a virus but know vry little about computers.

Any suggestions. Thanx in advance.

Do a hard shutdown. Just power off. Let the computer sit for a minute and than restart. See if it behaves better.

Well, have you scanned for spyware with Spybot and Adaware? Do you have a virus scanner? Try housecall's online scanner.

Dell support has been out of India lately. How goes the computer? And just keep hacking away at it. Let us know what it finds.

For on Computer help do the Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter.

Left double click "My Computer" - Right Click "C Drive" and than you will find these 2 tools here. Run cleanup first.

Just an aside: no they haven't. Just for their Business buyers, not for regular consumers.

Personally I'd just reformat the computer.

I think you're mistaken - they pulled out of india for their Optiplex and Lattitude lines this Feb, but other customers still reach india AFAIK. HP moved call centers to india though. Wouldn't you? They work for $1800 a year - $150/month. Compare that to paying a local kid 20 - 30,000 per year or more.

No. The India call center was for everyone then Business customers that are the Dell bread and butter began complaining about poor service so Dell moved Business to the US( the Optiplex desktop and Latitude notebook computers). Other business customers also use the India call center. Trigger was right.

Home is still getting India Tech support. They can care less about Home customers because they do not buy often enough for them to care what they think.

You do not want to reformat unless you have either a "system recovery disk" from manufacturer or disks for Windows and all your application software. You lose everything when you reformat.

If you still want to do it, bail to DOS, and at DOS prompt, enter Format C: Afterward, you have reinstall Windows and then all your application programs. (A system recovery disk does that too, but in less steps). You have to have the disks to reinstall or you are SOL. I can't emphasize that enough.

Seriously, I would keep working on it. Run System Cleanup, and Defrag, get SpyBot and AdAware and run them, do you have a good virus scanning program, either McAfee or Norton.
