How to get XP Pro to act like XP Pro?

My work laptop acts like Windows 2000 in that the Windows Login screen does not look like the typical out-of-box XP Pro login screen, nor does the start menu have an icon at the top of it like an out-of-box XP Pro install. Where are these options set, and how do I change it to look like a typical XP Pro installation instead of Windows 2000/Network installation? I have Admin. rights.

Try going to your display properties, and under the Appearance tab, change Windows and Buttons from classic style to XP style. That will fix the general look of XP.

The logon screen is controlled under user accounts..change the way users log on or off...enable the welcome screen.

If the computer is a member of a domain, thats the only way it'll be.

Try going to the options for the taskbar/start menu by right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting "properties." Go to the Start Menu tab and see if "Classic Start menu" is selected. If it is, select "Start menu" to use the newer XP start menu. (What Shadow Ace said will make the buttons and colors different, but have no effect on the start menu style.)

I like the old start menu myself, but diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I do know that this requires registry hacking and/or getting in to gpedit.msc or services.msc and making some changes. I've tried everything I can think of, and have been successful getting the start menu to look like typical XP, aside from the user icon at the top. I cannot figure out how to get the user icon/picture to appear beside my name at the top of the start menu.

Did you go into user accounts under the control panel and change that?

The option isn't available. It's gonna take some advanced editing to get this changed I think.

Perhaps what dgmayor said above is your answer. You manage users and logons differently that way.

How about changing to a workgroup to find out?

remember that you may lose domain accounts once you leave a domain!!!!!!!!! i.e. if you don't have the local admin password you may not be able to get back in your machine ( without hacking.)
