a5HJ.exe - Is this a virus?

Does anyone know if this file is a virus: a5HJ.exe

Is there any way I can check to see what kind of file it is? This morning I recevied a NIS pop-up that it was trying to access the internet.

Whoa, nothing in Google.

That means it doesn't exist

But seriously, what directory is it in?

See if you can go to an anti-virus site like Symantec or Trend Micro.

You might have gaobot.

You can no longer rely on filenames to identify a virus or worm.

Either use an up-to-date virus scanner (maybe several) or just pray. Yer choice.

Or ... if you're not sure what it is and nothing shows up on the Internet, then DELETE it (leave it in the Recycle Bin). Reboot and see if everything works okay. Wait a week, then empty the Recycle Bin.

On second thought, turn off the computer and run away.

I am positive, just based on the name, that it is a virus, adware, or spyware of some kind. They use randomly generated names like that to fool you. One thing I'd do is check your registry for it also and remove whatever runs it and look for anything that leads you the other files it's using also.

And what directory is it in?
And is it running?

For some reason, when I do a file search, it does not show up on the directory Norton Internet Security says it is in. It is only in c:\windows\prefetch and is a .pf file.

How do I locate the actual file?

OK, I've located the file as a hidden file, but when I try to delete it, it won't let me. How do I delete the file?

It's probably running on your PC right now
Open up Task Manager and have Windows Explorer open to where the file is located it. End Task the program and then delete the file.

It could also be spyware. I'd run a scan your system with Spybot and AdAware.

Thanks for the replies. I did open up the Task Manager and it does not show up in my Applications > Task menu.

Try restarting in safe mode and deleting it then.

Assuming you're running XP or 2000, take a look in the Processes tab.

Thanks...it was in there. I was able to delete the file. Hopefully it was really a belligerent file and not a necessary Windows file.
