help with older laptop running win98...

I pulled out my old IBM Thinkpad w/ win98 to use at the office. It's had a few glitches here and there, but nothing intolerable. I recently tried adding a USB mouse to it, and it worked fine for about a day then no longer recognized (via plug and play). When i tried to manually add it, it still did not recognize and began a conflict with my dispaly adapter (an ATI Mobility Radeon) and the Interrupt Request and I/O range. Which dropped my display from 256 to 16 colors. when i changed it back it will only boot in safe mode so my options are limited, and every time i boot in safe mode it shuts down. I dont know much about manually changing these settings. is there any way to return to previous settings the way you can with WIN XP? or is it a lost hope? Any kind of insight would be great.

Use a PS2 mouse instead of a USB mouse?

Yeah, I would second that too. What model is it? It should be on the top right of the keyboard. You may need the driver for the display since you should be able to have 16 bit color, not just 256. Then see what happens.
