PC Locks up continouosly

I'm running Windows 2000 XP Home Edition on a Dell PC. Since this evening, I've had really bad trouble with applications locking up and forcing me to do a manual reboot. This happens even if I have only one application running. I can't even run Norton scans long enough to detect anything (it will lock up mid-way through). Any suggestions for trouble-shooting this issue? I recently had to re-install Norton Personal Firewall, but everything seems to have been fine up until now. Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm gonna go with XP. To stop the startup of other apps that may cause you to reboot goto...
startup-run-type"msconfig" & click ok.
Select "Selective" mode halfway down. Checkmark out of "load startup" under it and restart computer.

Without them running perhaps you can take a better look around.

Well, it looks like Norton Firewall was the culprit once again. I seem to have had ongoing problems with it for the past month. I thought I successfully re-installed it again about 2 weeks ago, but problems seemed to keep popping up. I decided to try out Agnitum Outpost instead. So far, no system problems.

Powerful bad combination if it causes you to shut down to get out of lockups. How is it doing that? Any idea?

Not a clue, unfortunately. The only thing I can thnk of is that I have some other software or process running that is causing a conflict with Norton.
