xp restarts when using cd-rom drive

Hello,

my roommates machine has the above mentioned problem. Whenever he tries to copy files from a CD to his 2nd hdd, xp restarts. No messges, no nothing.
This is a new system that he built on sunday. the only that changed between then and now was the installation of the 2nd hdd.
his specs:
AMD athlon XP 2500
asus motherboard with via chipset
512 DDR PC2700 333mhz
2 hard drives 1 80gig (primary) with FAT32 partion
1 250gig (secondary) with NTFS partion
56x generic CDRW
old 32 mb video card. nvidvia chipset (old geforce i think)
win xp professional

I have done the following. Installed norton and updated all definations, scan for virus nothing found.
ran spyware/adware removal softwawre - nothing found
installed service pack 1 and all xp updates
increased virtual memory settings

I also unchecked automatic reboot so when it happens again i'll at least get an error message.

case temp. is about 80-85 degrees F.
cpu temp is about 90-100 degrees F.
not using the stock fan/heatsink, had bought a seperate one.

it only happens when your coping files from the CD-rom to the 2nd HDD (he's in the process of moving all backup music cds to the HDD)
u can surf the net, play a game (i tested some UT on it) play music, watch a trailer or 2 without issues.

I've done a search on the net and there seems to be know real cause. A lot of people point to heat being a factor from overclocking or too hot video card. VG card is old as dirt (no heat there) and the pc is not overclocked.

Any other things I can try, look into?
thanks,
-b.

I would try it with Norton temporarily not running and see if it reboots.

If it does I would go into the device manager and remove the CD-ROM and reboot. It should reinstall it at startup. Try it out and see what happens.

I installed norton because of the rebooting (it didnt have any antivirus software, my first thought was sasser or something)

I'll try removing the CD-ROM when I get home. thanks!
