Pentium 4 with HT vs. AMD Athlon 64

Looking at new computers. I want to use it for gaming and video editing. Which processor would be the best to use for those applications. I am not sure what the 64 bit processing is all about.
Thanks.
Let me know if you need more information to answer the question.

P4 is generally considered more powerful for video editing functions than Athlons but I don't know if that applies to the Athlon 64 as well.

I'm too lazy to find links with benchmarks, but from the benchmarks I've seen, the P4 and Athlon 64 are usually neck in neck. i think you can usually save a couple of hundred dollars on an Athlon 64 vs. a comparable P4. I'm sure a few of these sites would have some reviews:

www.tomshardware.com

www.anandtech.com

www.hardocp.com

www.sharkyextreme.com

One of the more recent issues of PC magazine had a comprehensive comparison between the P4 and the Athlon. See if you can locate it.

The problem with the Athlon 64 is that you need true 64 bit applications to fully realize its power. And though they are out there, I doubt you'd be using any. So why not just go with the Athlon FX if you really want power? I'd just go with the XP 3200 or the P4 if you want standard gaming and editing power.
