is a TDK DVD burner 4x any good?

I was at Frys today and they had 4x DVD burners TDK for about $100. They also had white box 8x burners for the same price. Are these any good? Obviously, I know I can buy something more expensive that will be better but just curious on people's thoughts.. Anyone know if new versions will be coming out soon that will drop the 8x prices to the current 4x prices.. I plan to use the burner for backup HD, and storing music and video

I don't know about that brand but the prices are certainly nothing special. I would not pay that much for either speed.

You can read peer reviews of TDK burners here. Most are rated well, if the price is right.

I'd say around $40, $50 absolute max. Just look around for a deal.

I got my last 4x for $25 (Pioneer A06 rebadged as a Memorex).

How about an external 4x R drive with USB 2.0 and Firewire interfaces for $100?

http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CDICD00237

Use coupon code GEEK99 to get the $100 price.

It's a CenDyne and I hear their warranties are good again since they got taken over by a creditor.
