What is a good size for thumbnails? (website design question)

Putting together a few photo pages...what I'm doing is having one page of several thumbnails that are links to the fullsize image. I'm just not sure what size(in pixels) to make each thumbnail and how many I should have per page. Also, I was planning on making tables for all of the thumbnails, and am not sure of the best way to have a page that displays both landscape and portrait thumbnails.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I originally used the rule that the longest side should be 200 pixels and the shorter side was whatever it should be. That made for pretty big thumbnails so I decided to limit how many went on a page.

I've since changed my thinking: the longest side is now 128 pixels x whatever, and all of the photos (for that gallery) go on that page.

It also depends on how many pictures you have and also on how much detail you really need in the thumbnails.

I use thumbnails anywhere between 48x36 to 160x120.

I think I settled on the longest side being 100 pixels for my Dragon Con pages.

I use 120 pixels on for the longest side on mine.

Check out everyone's gallery to see how our's are designed.
