Is an AGP 8x card backwards compatable?

It's time to face the music, my current computer no longer cuts it...

The first thing I'd like to upgrade is the video card, but there's no sense buying another 4x card that'll just have to be upgraded again when i get a new motherboard.

Will the 8x cards work in an older 4x slot, until such time as I can afford a new mb/cpu/RAM?

Generally yes, but you should check the manufacturer's spec's to be certain.

But in all fairness, there isn't really a performance gain between 8X and 4X.

I've not had any problems using any NVIDIA AGP 8x card (NV18/NV28/NV3x/NV40) on any of the 4x motherboards I've used.

Maybe its just late and i'm really tired but...wasn't there a voltage difference between them? 1.5 vs 3 or 3.3 or something? Blah I can't think right now.
