DVD- ROM in my pc...will it read DVD-R and DVD+R?

it is only a player deck but I'm unsure if dvd drives are universal or not. I'm having someone create me some discs and I need to know what type I should get to send out. will it read both types of discs? is one any better than the other?

Generally it will if it was made within the last couple of years.

The DVD-R was implemented first so it may be safer.

thank you for you response. the drive is around a year old. another thing, what about disc record speed? 2.4X, 4X, 8X? the disc will most likely be recorded at 2 or 4X.

4x should be fine. I'd use the speed the disc is rated for but I'd probably stay away from 8x.

As I was thinking about it, DVD+R with the bootype bit set would be the most compatible. It requires a burner that lets you set that bit but if you can it flags the DVD+R to look like a DVD-ROM.

If you don't know what I'm talking about or don't care that's fine. It's mostly only important for standalone players.
