Windows Media CD Burning Questions

I used Windows Media Player to import CDs into my computer. However, when I burn these songs to a CD, there is a noticeable phlanging. Is this a common effect of using the Windows Media Player to imoprt the music? When I check the files, instead of saving them as WAV files, they're saved as Windows Media files. Could this cause the phlanging? Is there anyway to change these files to WAVs, or do I need to delete the files and re-ipmort the CDs using a different software?
Thanks
