I would like to second Desmond's opinion. I do tech support for a living, and X's advice is always right on the mark.

Thanks, mate. (Is this a poll?)

No big deal, I just try to help other people from having to make all the mistakes I've made. But it's nice to be appreciated.

X has a script in the Tech Forum: if a real problem is posted, it call his cell phone and wakes him up; if it's just a comment or a compliment, it lets him sleep till morning and lets him check manually.

X - how about pinning the Common Answers to Common Questions thread?

I have reservations about it being a sticky in its present form. Many answers in your first post were very much from your viewpoint and other people could easily disagree with them. No offense, but I would prefer that if the first post looks authoritative it would contain generally accepted answers more than opinion.

For instance...

I think I have a virus on my PC, what can I do?
An important issue and, as you say, definitely your opinion. But I think it's also not a complete enough answer. For instance, what if they don't have internet access?

Should I leave my PC on all the time or turn it off when not in use?
Definitely a matter of opinion and the factors I consider important in deciding the correct answer and alternatives such as power management and hibernation are not even mentioned.

Where's the best place to buy PC parts?
I don't even know where to start commenting on that one.

And then the thread becomes a hodgepodge of random comments and solutions.

What I'm getting at is that I think it would be beneficial to separate fact from opinion before making the thread appear more "official". I don't want to make this real complicated but I think we should go through a process of at least getting generally accepted answers in the first post. Perhaps we can hash them out in the existing thread?

yea.. i was going to comment about the whole power with leaving your power on thing.. but i figured it was pointless

definitly a matter of opinion.. because its easy enough to run a test and see that when your monitor isnt on, your pc is using very minimal power.. almost none when you use very simple methods of conserving..

i agree that some points were completey based on opinions.. which was a large reason i decided to stay out of that thread

its a good idea, and i think we all appreciate trigger's efforts.. but definitly should be reliant on fact rather than opinion

I agree that a thread has to have some definitive answers that we look to use. Let us do what is suggested and get some solid answers to put in a new thread. Coming over twikoff?

And X you are doing a fine job here. Thumbsup.
