DVD-drive just died on me

About a week ago, my DVD-drive just stopped working on me. Before this time, it had been working fine. No skipping, read the disc quickly, yada yada. Then it suddenly quit doing its job.

Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this, or does anyone have any idea what it could be based on common/similar problems?

I operate on XP Pro, and Device Manager lists the drive as "JLMS XJ-HD166S."

Thanks for any help.

Did you lose the Drive Letter in My Computer? Or do discs just not read any more? Any error messages in Hardware Manager under devices?

This happened to me after I installed HP software called INCD or DriveSelect.

1. Uninstall all software recently installed, especially burning software, drive select software, anything related to this.

2. disconnect all your other optical drives (cdrom, cdrw, dvd/rw) from the IDE cables. only connect your hard drive (boot drive) on the primary IDE cable. only connect this problematic dvdrom on the secondary IDE cable. set the jumper on this dvdrom to master. In cmos setup, set all devices to autodetect.

Log on, and test. good luck.
