umm... whatever will work? i.e. rearch from your IDE controller to your IDE devices?

I use 24", but then again, I have a full tower file server and about twenty million of them running...

first off.

first size and kind of case do you have?

secondly, how many devices do you plan to connect? per ribbon (cable)? you can put two on one, generally most IDE controllers come with two channels, for a total of four devices.

but if you get one of those really stripped down motherboards, you may only have one channel, but highly unlikely.

anyways, i'd go at least 24" no matter what... just having that flexibility of range is nice.

but if you're housing a full tower, or having a lot of devices throughout your system unit, 36" might be easier.

Sorry about SVC. I've ordered a couple of times from them, never talked to them, and it went fine.

In terms of what length cable... as short as possible!

Here is my case

Dragon Ultra Glossy Case with 500W Power Supply

An I do have a MoBo that will handle 4 IDE devices.

2 HD's and 2 DVD Drives

What do you think?

And any suggestions on WHERE to get the UV reactive products? (lights, fans, grills, IDE round UV cables)

hmmmm...

WEIRD

They don't sell that case anymore?

GLAD I bought it when I did and stop delaying!

Well, look at any of the links for the Chieftec Dragon cases with clear side and front USB and FIREWIRE

That will give you the dimensions and stats for my case

Adding ZipZoomFly to my list of vendors I will never use again.

When everyone said "ONLY GO WITH NEWEGG" they were 100% right. The NewEgg order was place on Sunday night and I picked the "free fedex save delivery" (Usually 4 - 5 days I was told) newEgg put it in as 2 day delivery. It is coming from West Coast to East Coast in 2 days. It is on the FedEx truck and scheduled for delivery today.

NewEgg will be the only online computer company I do biusines with from now

You're blacklisting ZipZoomFly because UPS didn't deliver?

As far as cables go, if memory serves, IDE spec for max lenght is 18".

Nope, because of their email correspondance with me over the initial delays in shipping on THEIR end.

18" hmmmm... Well, this might sound dumb, but why do they make the lengths in 18", 24" and even up to 36"?

How can I be sure 18" will be long enough?

I've ordered from ZipZoomFly on several occassions without any problems. Of course, everything shipped on time and as promsied, so I've never had a reason to correspond with them.

Just because that's what the spec says doesn't mean it won't work with longer cables. I've never seen anybody say that 24" cables didn't work for them.

To put it another way, as X says, use the shortest length possible.

More info on IDE cables

http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/id...Cable80-c.html

the longer cables will work, there might be some performance issues, but I have never had any problems with the 36" cable in my full tower case.

Um...different lengths for ... different distances ... IDE is used for cdroms at the top of the tower usually...it has to reach there...

as far as you wondering if it's long enough? Measure?

If your devoting an ide to 1 or 2 hd's you'll probably have them near the controller...in which case the shortes ide should be long enough. the longer ones are for the cdroms and burners that are farther away.

Just look at the size of case and internal shots of your case and the size of your motherboard and do a little math or common sense work...you should be able to hit them just fine.
